Major General Christopher Musa, the theater commander for Operation Hadin Kai, has urged the Independent National Electoral Commission to find a means to enable soldiers serving on the front lines to cast ballots in the nation's elections.
As military were expected to be on duty on election day, Musa argued that they should be permitted to cast their votes the day before the election, as is customary in other nations.
He also encouraged INEC to find a long-term solution to the issue while reiterating that soldiers and other security personnel have the same right to vote as other Nigerians.
Everyone has a right to vote, he said. Simply put, Nigeria doesn't have a good system in place. The military and security vote one day ahead of everyone else in several other regions. This will allow them to focus on their responsibilities the following day. That would be acceptable if it were done for the troops.
The issue we have is that we are always on call during elections. Additionally, uniforms are not permitted when voting. The impartial national electoral commission should take care of that (INEC).
